A Wicket of Lies

Antiques expert Dotty Sayers is enjoying a Cotswold summer cricket festival until the suspicious death of the village’s star player turns her cream tea sour.

Her best friend, cafe owner Keya Varma, is appointed crime scene manager, but investigating the death of her teammate is distressing, especially when the evidence doesn’t fit the apparent accident.

As the village team helps with enquiries, Dotty and Keya discover a scandal that destroyed the dead woman’s career and left people from her past with reasons to resent her.

Can the two friends solve the murder before the festival crowds head home?

A Wicket of Lies, the second book in Victoria Tait’s Cotswold Antique Mystery series, is a clean, feel-good British cozy mystery. This fair-play whodunnit features strong female friendship, summer festivities, Cotswold village life, gentle humour, eccentric characters and a touch of slow-burn romance. The mystery is fully resolved with no cliffhanger. Perfect for fans of Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club and M.C. Beaton’s Agatha Raisin, and viewers who love Murder, She Wrote and Midsomer Murders.

What readers say

While A Wicket of Lies focused more on cricket at first, which worked well for me, the mystery that materializes and Dotty’s awakening set this story apart. It warmed my heart and broke my heart. Ms. Tait’s characters strongly pull readers into their stories. You will be rooting for some and worried about others. Some characters will have you doing both.

The focus was on the murder and the mystery details of this book were, as always with Victoria Tait books, so well paced and interesting. There were several plausible suspects and Dotty did a great job of sleuthing to find the answers. I look forward to reading future cozy mysteries in this series.

I highly recommend A Wicket of Lies by Victoria Tait! I loved the unique setting of the cricket match. The characters are well-written and ones I love. The mystery is well-plotted with just enough clues to lead you to the culprit! 5 stars!
