An Auction of Secrets

Antiques expert Dotty Sayers is fighting to save a Cotswold auction house, but during a routine house clearance she discovers a link to the murder of a local bookseller.

Dotty is delighted to have worked her way up from receptionist to auction manager, but her new responsibilities demand her full attention, leaving little time for sleuthing.

Her best friend, cafe owner Keya Varma, has recently retrained as a crime scene manager. The bookseller’s murder is her first case, and she’s nervous about taking charge.

With Keya’s help, Dotty uncovers connections between the bookseller’s death, lost wartime treasure and a long-concealed identity. But her search for answers leads her to a deadly confrontation.

Can Keya and their friends reach Dotty before she becomes the next victim?

An Auction of Secrets is the first book in Victoria Tait’s Cotswold Antique Mystery series, a clean, feel-good British cozy mystery. This fair-play whodunnit features a female amateur sleuth, authentic antiques detail, strong female friendship, Cotswold village life, gentle humour, eccentric characters, a British Blue cat and a touch of slow-burn romance. The mystery is fully resolved with no cliffhanger. Perfect for fans of Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club and M.C. Beaton’s Agatha Raisin, and viewers who love Murder, She Wrote and Antiques Roadshow.

What readers say

Ms. Tait plotted this story out perfectly. … An Auction of Secrets is a captivating story containing engaging characters who are facing changes and new challenges, and intriguing mysteries with a historical slant. It’s another Perfect Escape from Victoria Tait.

I found this story to be very well written, immersive, and well described in terms of places and events. There was a very good mystery element and the guilty party (parties?) weren't revealed until nearly the very end. And there were many suspects which made the mystery even more difficult to figure out.

This book is full of interesting things and people, exciting futures, as well as some old familiar friendships and settings. It’s a new burst of energy. It’s refreshing. And I loved it.
